If you are a student at Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury, Connecticut, you will have no trouble accessing gun control websites like Moms Demand Action or Newtown Action Alliance on the school’s internet.
However if you try to visit NRA.org, the school’s firewall will prevent you from doing so.
18 year old senior Andrew Lampart made the discovery while doing research on gun control for a class debate. He found out that NRA.org wasn’t the only conservative website that was blocked. It was also the sites that were left unblocked that caused Lampart the most concern.
He said, “I immediately found out that the State Democrat web site was unblocked but the State GOP web site was blocked.”
The high school’s firewall took the censorship to a different level when it came to abortion and religion. Islam-guide.com was unblocked but Christianity.com and the Vatican’s were blocked.
Students were also able to access Planned Parenthood and Pro-Choice America but Pro Life groups were blocked.
Andrew notified the Superintendent of Woodbury schools and nothing was done. A week later he took his concerns to the Board of Education. Board Chairman John Chapman said, “It’s not a joking matter in terms of having access to both sides of an issue”.
The school district finally released a statement on Thursday and blamed the censorship on the filtering provider Dell SonicWall.
