Detroit Police Chief James Craig is giving armed citizens credit for the drop in crime in his city according to a report by the Detroit News.
Robberies in Detroit have dropped 37% in 2014 when compared to the same time in 2013. There have also been 22% fewer break-ins of businesses and homes, and 30% less car jackings.
What caused this drop in crime in a city where crime is rampant? According to Craig, criminals are more reluctant to prey on citizens because more citizens are carrying guns.
Craig said, “Criminals are getting the message that good Detroiters are armed and will use that weapon. I don’t want to take away from the good work our investigators are doing, but I think part of the drop in crime, and robberies in particular, is because criminals are thinking twice that citizens could be armed.”
I can’t say what specific percentage is caused by this, but there’s no question in my mind it has had an effect.
You might remember back in January when Craig made headlines for saying that armed citizens deter crime. In May, he was featured in an NRA publication urging citizens to use guns for protection.
Al Woods, who is a former criminal and a resident of Detroit, said that if he was still out robbing people, he would have to rethink his game plan knowing that a lot more people are carrying guns.
I’m talking about criminals who are thinking of robbing a citizen; they’re less likely to do so if they think they might be armed
