A 2nd grader was suspended from school because he was pretending to be a marine like his father. The 7-year-old was doing what many young boys do at that age, playing and being imaginative.
According to the school he was using his pencil like a gun, and somehow that was deemed to be dangerous and threatening, even though the boy he was playing with didn’t see it that way.
A school spokesperson said the school has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to weapons– but wait… I thought this was a pencil. Did it shoot poisonous darts or something? Well according to the school,
“A pencil is a weapon when it is pointed at someone in a threatening way and gun noises are made.”
Bethanne Bradshaw is the spokesperson for Suffolk public schools and she defended the school for taking swift action in suspending the 7-year-old boy, saying,
“Some children would consider it threatening, who are scared about shootings in schools or shootings in the community. Kids don’t think about ‘Cowboys and Indians’ anymore, they think about drive-by shootings and murders and everything they see on television news every day.”
See the video below and you tell me who should be suspended:
The boy’s father, a former marine, said that common sense should be brought into play, and we tend to agree with him. But common sense was kicked out of schools long ago. The father also says the school went too far and that “enough is enough” saying,
He was just being a kid
The boy says he was sorry and that he was just playing with his friend. And of course his friend who was playing the bad guy was not suspended or even reprimanded in anyway.
Maybe if those “gun noises” were not so realistic and the way he held his pencil was not so threatening he would not have been suspended, but since these educators only see guns as evils they will probably spend more time trying to punish the children of gun owners rather than educate them on how guns can be used to save lives.
So what do you think should have happened to this child? Or what about the school? How come school administrators can’t be suspended for making stupid decisions like this?
