In an interview on Foxnews yesterday, Bob Costas tried to defend himself against accusations that he was a hypocrite on gun control. He has excused his use of armed security guards by saying that he never hired them personally but they were hired by the NFL or NBC for him.
Fox News’s Howard Kurtz brought up topics like political correctness op the topic of the Washington Redskins name and then went on to issues relating to the controversial comments Costas has made on gun control.
Costas has in the past made comments like this one:
“I think any sane person believes we ought not have high capacity magazines and assault rifles and that there ought to be background checks,” Costas said. “You know what? I’m not exactly sure what’s sane, but I know a lot of what I’ve heard in the aftermath is insane.”
In the interview Kurtz said,
“You were accused of injecting politics into halftime, and Fox News’s Greg Gutfeld said you were ‘a hypocritical buffoon’ because you’re in New York, and you’re surrounded by armed guards, and you don’t have to worry about safety.”
Costas replied, “In truth, Greg was accurate if you consider one-hundred-eighty degrees from the truth accurate. I have never had a personal bodyguard a single day in my life. There are security people at NFL games that the NFL employs, and there is always massive security at an Olympics, and there… is NBC security.”
Wait a minute. Did you catch what Costas did there? Gutfeld never said Costas hired a personal body guard. What he said was that Costas didn’t have to worry about his own safety because he was surrounded by people that were armed for him, a luxury that most of us can’t afford. And in that point Gutfeld was NOT 180 degrees from the truth.
Costas did not argue the point that he was surrounded by armed security, but if he is so staunchly against guns why does he not request that all of these security officers leave their guns at home. Then at least we can stop calling him a hypocrite.
