It seems that after one accident with a weapon, certain politicians see a need to make a new law for protective purposes. Ever since the 9 year old girl accidentally shot her instructor in Arizona last week, a Democratic lawmaker has been proposing a ban on giving machine guns to children according to the Phoenix New Times.
In the words of Democratic Representative Victoria Steele, “I cannot believe that we need a law like this, but we do”.
The following video shows the few moments before the accidental death at the Last Stop gun range in White Hills. Video footage shows how the girl lost control of the firearm, although the video cuts off a split-second before shooting instructor Charles Vacca was shot.
Steele said that she was disgusted that we even need such a law, and that parents can’t be trusted to not give a machine gun to a 9 year old girl.
Believe it or not, Steele was given this idea from Connecticut lawmakers that passed an identical bill after a similar accident involving an 8 year old boy and an Uzi in the state of Massachusetts.
This wouldn’t be Steele’s first attempt to pass a gun-safety law — earlier this year, she proposed a law that would have required adults to keep guns locked up if there are children in the home. Steele’s bill didn’t even get a hearing, and the Republican-controlled Legislature actually passed some laws relaxing gun regulations.
However, the very thought of this possible future ban lies with the citizens of the Tucson residents. Steele is up for re-election this year, and the next legislative session will not start until next year. So Steele cannot propose this bill until she is voted back in. Interesting how that works. Let the people’s voice be heard!
