A store clerk who was shot in the abdomen didn’t even know he was shot until he started feeling chest pains. It was then that he found that his HTC smartphone took the bullet for him and possibly saved his life.
We aren’t sure what caliber was used in the shooting, but according to WESH.com the armed robber had a revolver when he entered a Hess gas station in Florida and demanded for the store clerk to open the safe.
When the store clerk had trouble opening the safe and another clerk came out to help him, the hooded robber fired a shot at the clerk and ran out of the store.
Police said it wasn’t until they were interviewing the clerks that the man who was shot began complaining of pain in his chest.
‘The clerk said, “I feel like my chest hurts.” That’s when medical personnel started looking at him, realized the guy had actually shot at him, hit him, and the cell phone had stopped his bullet,’ Winter Garden police Lieutenant Scott Allen told WESH-TV.
“I’ve seen individuals get shot with low-caliber handguns and I’ve seen it be life ending. So for this gentleman to be as lucky as he is, it’s a good day for us,” said Winter Garden police Lt. Scott Allen.
The suspect is described as a black man standing 6 feet tall, wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, pants, sunglasses, a bright yellow traffic vest and white gloves.
While we are big proponents of self defensive gun uses, this is a case in which a cell phone saved a life but only because it was a low caliber handgun involved. But it should still underscore the point that the bad guys are armed (in spite of laws that are supposed to stop them) and simply doing what they ask does not guarantee your safety.
It also makes me wonder what other cell phones could have stopped a bullet and which smartphone would be the most bulletproof on the market right now. Might be a project for someone with lot’s of time and money on his hands.
