Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy is not a fan of the 2nd amendment. This was clearly evident when he made remarks about his officers shooting gun carrying citizens because of his training, as we reported on in late August. Apparently he wasn’t too happy about the new concealed carry laws in his state.
But now the police chief is letting us all know how he really feels about law abiding citizens carrying guns.
While talking about how many guns the city has seized (more than 6,500 this year) McCarthy claimed that the real problem with violence in Chicago is guns, which would explain why every city with guns has the same murder problem as Chicago right?
“Carrying a loaded firearm is the gateway crime to committing a murder,” McCarthy touted.
Do I even have to explain how absolutely absurd that comment is? If carrying a loaded gun is a gateway to committing murder than driving a car is the gateway to running over people, carrying a pocket knife is the gateway to going on a stabbing spree, and owning a pizza shop is the gateway to joining the mafia.
There are MILLIONS of law abiding citizens who carry loaded firearms every day and who shoot NO ONE. Carrying a loaded firearm is the gateway to self defense for law abiding citizens.
The “gateway” to committing murder is in the heart and many that have committed these murders are also repeated violent offenders who should not even be free to walk down the street.
A CBS news article claims that Chicago’s murder numbers are down this year to 407 from 507 last year, but they are ignoring the real facts to come up with these numbers.
Bearingarms.com pointed out the news organizations inaccuracies.
McCarthy’s view of his department’s success is so divorced from reality as to be laughable. There were 500+ murders in Chicago last year, so many that the exact numbers are in dispute; this CBS report claims “just” 507, but Chicago Redeye documents by name 520 homicide victims, and Crime in Chicago blog claims 537!
Chicago continues to have a serious murder problem. But the city has addressed the problem by making it as hard as possible for law abiding citizens to own and carry guns while the criminals who ignore gun laws entirely continue to commit crimes across the windy city.
