When you feel your life is in danger it really doesn’t matter what laws are on the books. This Colorado woman acted in self-defense and self preservation when she grabbed her gun instead of abiding by the laws of Colorado.
A man tried to break into a woman’s bedroom in the middle of the night. She said she was able to scare him off when she got her gun.
This happened near Union and Platte in Colorado Springs. Diana Richter woke up to a man popping off the screen to her bedroom window. She opened fire toward him with a gun after she shouted warnings at him several times.
“I was saying whoever you are, I don’t know who you are, but I will shoot you. Back away from my house,” Richter recalled.
It was just after 3 a.m. when investigators say a man tried to break into Richter’s home.
“It was my worst fear that’s every girl’s worst fear. You know, two women living in a house alone, it’s everybody’s worst fear,” Richter said.
Richter grew up with brothers in the military, and said she learned to use a gun at a young age.
“I would never want to hurt somebody but when I’m in danger, I think about my family before I would think about him,” Richter said.
She said she fired five shots into the darkness. Investigators spent several hours searching for the suspect with K-9 units, but never found him.

Richter said in hindsight, she knows the make my day law in Colorado wouldn’t have protected her if she had hit the man since he wasn’t in her home yet. However she told 11 News, at three in the morning, that law was the last thing she was thinking about.
