ELLENTON, FL — The suspect in the above picture is being charged with attempted murder and attempted armed robbery as he attempted to fire 3 shots at a coin shop owner who was helping him, but the gun never went off. He has been identified as La’Tay McKelly.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, McKelly entered the shop requesting an appraisal for some jewelry. As the owner was helping him, the McKelly pulled out a handgun and struck the victim on the top of the head. As the coin shop owner staggered backwards, the Mckelly tried to fire at least three shots at him.
Thankfully the gun misfired all 3 times.
But the owner of the coin shop had his own gun. He grabbed for it behind the counter and shot at Mckelly hitting him at least once. The would-be robber and murderer then fled the scene but since has been caught and arrested by police.
McKelly is being treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound but the injury is not life threatening and he will be booked into the Manatee County Jail as soon as he’s released from the hospital.
It’s a good thing the shop owner had his own gun so the bad guy would not have time to clear the problem with his gun and get a shot off. It’s clear he was trying to kill the store owner, and even in the picture you can see his finger on the trigger.
