For the last four years the Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte, NC has been doing business with what was supposed to be a “gun friendly” credit card company to handle all of their online transactions.
The credit card company is Authorize.net/CyberSource, a subsidiary of Visa, and oh– it’s a major Obama campaign donor. Well the gun shop in Charlotte which happens to be America’s largest gun shop has just found out that the credit card company is dropping them. And they are no longer working with the gun shop for the following reason:
Because the Hyatt Gun Shop sells guns. Actually the official wording was, ““The sale of firearms or any similar product.”
The Washington Examiner has reported that the gun shop received an email from the credit card processor with this message:
Authorize.Net LLC (“Authorize.Net”) has determined that the nature of your business constitutes a violation of Section 2.xiv of the Authorize.Net Acceptable Use Guidelines and Sections 3.3 and 11.3 of the Authorize.Net Service Agreement (the “Agreement”). These sections include, but are not limited to, the sale of firearms or any similar product. Accordingly, pursuant to Section 4 of the Acceptable Use Guidelines, your ability to access and use the Authorize.Net Services will be terminated on September 30, 2013.
The gun shop NEVER hid the fact that it sold guns, and Authorize.net would have to be amazingly ignorant to miss the fact that the name of the shop was Hyatt GUN SHOP. What did they think they sold?
This move by the Visa subsidiary has prompted a nationwide boycott of the company which has been organized by Grass Roots North Carolina.
“It looks like the small but noisy anti-gun crowd has gotten to what must be a jelly-spined PR department at CyberSource and Authorize.Net. Either that, or leadership at these companies have simply become anti-gun all on their own,” said the website in announcing the boycott.
The timing of this move by Authorize.net comes on the heels of President Obama calling for more change in the aftermath of the Navy Yard shooting.
The gun shop’s marketing director Justin Anderson said, “We’ve never seen anything like this.” Adding that it took a week and thousands of dollars to setup a credit card processor for the website that could gun sales.
