“Stand Your Ground” laws have been under heavy scrutiny every since the verdict of the Zimmerman trial, even though the defense never used the law as a basis for their client’s innocence.
Now that some Michigan lawmakers are wanting to review the law so they can potentially repeal the law, some common sense thinking people are stepping forward to say that the ability to defend yourself is a human right which should never be trifled with.
For Darrell Standberry it’s much more about the right to live than anything else.
“If it wasn’t for the ‘stand your ground’ law, right now I would be in jail, and my life could’ve been taken at that point,” Standberry said.
It happened nearly two years ago, but Standberry remembers like it was yesterday the moment he fatally shot a man trying to steal his SUV.
“I got out of the vehicle to go inside to pay for gas,” he said. “I turned back and looked, and he was already in the driver’s seat of my vehicle.”
“He turned around and looked and [saw] that I was still standing there, and that’s when he reached in his pocket to pull out his weapon. And I pulled out my weapon, and I fired one shot. And he took off in my vehicle.”
His ride was wrecked, the carjacker was dead, and Standberry was arrested. He was never charged with a crime, and he said it’s thanks to “stand your ground”
