You have to wonder if Dick’s Sporting Goods really wants the business of law abiding gun owners anymore. After Sandy Hook they removed all the black semi-automatic rifles from their shelves, and now there are reports that the company is mandating their own background check system for the purchase of ammunition.
I almost always either buy my ammo online or from local mom and pop shops here in town, so when I first saw this story I couldn’t believe a store was going above the law to require background checks on ammo purchases.
But according to the Gun Rights Across America group in Illinois this is the message a member received:
I received a message from a member who went to Dicks sporting goods in Nile, Ill. He went to purchase some .308 ammo. When he went to check out he says they scanned his FOID card and asked him some questions. When refusing to answer he refused to finish the purchase and asked what was up with the 3rd degree. He was informed it was “policy”. When asked to see such policy he was informed they didn’t have a copy for review. Has anyone else run into this? What’s your thoughts? And I have already contacted national GRAA for support. Stay tuned. Please let us hear your thoughts and experiences.
The guys over at freepatriot.org actually contacted the store and got some troubling answers that confirm these reports.
I personally contacted Dick’s in Niles, IL after speaking with “John,” and spoke with the manager on duty. James Lopez was unavailable for comment. The manager confirmed that this is Dick’s corporate policy, and acknowledged that this is not required under IL law.
The list of questions changes depending on the type of ammunition being purchased as well. The questions are as follows:
ALL AMMO. PURCHASES
1) Are you a U.S. Citizen?
RIFLE AMMO. PURCHASES
2) What is your D.O.B.?
3) What is your FOID Card number?
4) Must scan card
This has allegedly been their policy since shortly after the Sandy Hook tragedy, and the store manager directed me to contact corporate for more details when I asked why.
This is nothing short of an invasion of privacy and discrimination against law-abiding Illinois gun owners! The contact information for Dick’s corporate offices is below.
345 Court St.
Coraopolis PA 15108
While perhaps trying to be politically correct, Dick’s Sporting Goods is just going to anger a lot of gun owners with this policy. If the store wants to keep track of how many rounds of ammo their customers have purchased you can bet that it won’t be long before the feds are using that same information to target individuals they think have too much ammunition.
The store just needs to stop selling guns and ammo altogether if it continues discriminate against gun owners and invade their privacy.
