As New Yorkers continue to shred their gun registration forms that the so-called “SAFE Act” has mandated, the state has refused to release its numbers on how many of these falsely named “assault weapons” have actually been registered.
Some have estimated that as few as 10% have registered their guns, as compliance with this law will most probably lead to the eventual confiscation of the registered firearms. Many sheriffs in New York have also stated that they will not enforce the gun law.
According to Buffalo News,
In Erie County, the sheriff says he will not force his deputies to enforce registration.
“Theoretically, any law enforcement officer who encounters anyone with this type of gun at a minimum is supposed to record the serial number and the individual’s identity and report it to Albany,” Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said.
But will his deputies do that?
“I don’t know. I am not encouraging them to do it. At the same time, their own consciences should be their guide. I am not forcing my conscience on them. That is a decision they should make,” Howard said.
At a pro-gun rally on Tuesday New Yorkers gathered to shred their registration forms, saying that their government had been shredding the constitution for years.
Leah Gunn Barrett, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, was not too pleased with the rally for 2nd amendment rights, and she voiced her opinion on the matter by calling gun owners ignorant of what the law says.
“There’s a lot of hyperbole and misinformation floating around. People who owned these weapons before Jan. 15, 2013, can keep them. All they need to do is register them. It is painless, easy and costs nothing,” said Leah Gunn Barrett, “No guns are being taken away unless you fail to register your military-style assault weapon, if you happen to own one. If you register it, you can keep it.”
She’s calling a common semi-automatic rifle a military-style assault weapon and WE are the ones using hyperbole?
Besides calling them “weapons of war” the anti-gun group director also made a disturbing comment about registered firearms.
“Gun owners are required to report the theft of guns to the police. If an assault weapon that has been registered ends up in the wrong hands and is used in a crime, the police will know who is legally responsible – the gun owner.”
That comment really strikes at the heart of the matter. Anti-gunners believe that gun owners are the problem, not the ones committing crimes in the streets. Notice she says that it’s not the criminal who uses the gun illegally that is responsible. No, it’s the one who legally bought the gun and followed the law to register it with the state.
That comment earns Leah Gunn Barrett the “ridiculous comment of the week” award.
