The open carry law went into effect in Texas on January 1st, and contrary to what anti-protectionists thought, things have gone rather smoothly. Well, except for some businesses that have reserved their right to ban all guns from their property.
One Applebees in Copperas Cove decided to enact a policy that banned all open carry and concealed carry weapons from its restaurant.
And because a gun owner used his Facebook page to exclaim his resolve to find other places to eat the restaurant decided to change its policy
According to kwtx.com,
The Cove Applebee’s at 2525 East U.S. 190 allowed neither concealed nor openly carried handguns until Copperas Cove Mayor Pro-Tem Kirby Lack’s post about the policy on his personal Facebook page.
Lack said nearly 200 of his friends indicated they would consider taking their restaurant business elsewhere.
“My personal concern is when I read it in the newspaper that they had no concealed carry or open carry. That means I can’t go there because I’m not going to go in there without one so I thought the best thing to do was go and talk to the manager,” he said.
Lack said he visited the restaurant to show the manager the Facebook comments and ask why concealed-carry was not allowed.
He was told the concerns would be taken to “higher-ups,” and apparently they were, because the Cove restaurant now allows concealed carry except in its bar section.
“I didn’t do this is trying to start a revolt. I want Applebee’s to survive, to do well, it’s one of our premiere eating places,” he said.
Lack is a survivor of the Oct. 16, 1991 shooting rampage at the Killeen Luby’s restaurant that left 23 people and 20 others injured.
The massacre fueled efforts to pass the concealed carry law in Texas.
The state’s open carry law went into effect on Jan. 1.
“Since the laws passed, I’ve really heard nobody grumbling. I’ve only heard maybe two or three people at the most. Everybody was saying, we’re going to go see a bunch of cowboys walking around, I’ve seen nobody open carry,” he said.
The people here in Texas, we’ve been carrying pistols since we were kids. The majority of us anyways. It’s just normal people wanting to protect themselves.”
Applebee’s restaurants in Waco and Killeen said they allow neither open nor concealed carry.
The Temple location would not comment on its policy.
