Why is it that when a home invader is shot while trying to break into a house that the family always blames the homeowner who was trying to protect his family instead of the intruder who broke into the home in the first place?
I understand that no family member wants to see their brother or son shot, but there is nothing innocent about invading a home and putting another life in danger. As long as we keep blaming the law abiding citizens rather than the criminals (yes, even teenage ones), we will always have law suits and legal battles against the very people we need more of in this society.
In a neighborhood in Sacramento, California that has been hit hard with break-ins and criminal activity, an elderly brother and sister looked out for each other’s safety. In fact, the elderly woman that lived in the house that was broken into said she was scared to stay in her own home.
So when two teenage boys broke into their home, the elderly couple defended themselves and shot at both of them. One was 16 years old and the other only 14.
Now the family and friends of those two boys are speaking out against the elderly couple, saying that the boys didn’t deserve to be shot.
Police have not yet revealed if the elderly brother or sister fired the shots.
CBS Sacramento interviewed friends of the boys, some of whom said that perhaps the boys broke into the house to get something to eat:
One reporter asked, “So what was he doing in the home.” “I guess trying to eat”, was the reply.
“Justice was served,” said Robert Robinson.
Burglars hit his home twice before. The area is no stranger to crime that mostly consists of car and home break-ins.
“He was not an innocent bystander,” said neighbor David Keck. “I’m sorry the little boys or teenagers were killed, but if it’s my family, my family comes first.”
It should be noted that this was not the first time one of the boys had broken into this home. And after two other burglaries at this residence the elderly woman asked her brother to stay with her because she did not feel safe.
When asked if the boy were alive today what would she say to him one woman responded with, “You probably shouldn’t have done that.” I would agree except for the “probably”. He definitely should not have broken into the house, even if the homeowner were not a gun owner.
