An armed thief and a hero husband are dead after the husband heroically defended his wife and daughter. It happened in a ice cream parlor parking lot in Houston at 200 Aldine Bender road. The husband was identified as 26 year old Erasmo Alaniz. He was dead on arrival.
Erasmo was with his wife and daughter in their vehicle when the thief started walking to the vehicle. He opened the back passenger door and got into the car. “He got back in behind the wife. Pointed the gun at her and said give me all you have.” said Detective Christopher Elder with HPD.
But Erasmo wasn’t going to let his family be a group of victims to this thug. A struggle followed and a gun battle erupted in the vehicle. “The child was inside the car seat while the gunfire was happening,” said Elder. Both the mother and the daughter were unharmed in the shootout. Erasmo did however die in the driver seat.
The suspect was able to get back out of the car and stagger a few steps before he collapsed and died in the parking lot.
A group gathered around the scene after the incident. “A lot of this stuff has been happening pretty regular. But it’s unfortunate, you work hard for your entire life and people try and come and take your things.” said Nelson LaFleur, an area resident.
There were multiple witnesses that saw the shooting occur. Many witnesses were taken by detectives for questioning. Police will also be able to retrieve surveillance footage from some local businesses. Now the police are checking to see if the suspect knew the family, or if it was a random shooting.
While our hearts go out to the family, we know that the true hero in this report is the father that died in the driver seat, trying to protect his wife and daughter that were merely feet away from the armed thief. Your wife and daughter will never forget that they are still alive because they had an armed, loving husband and father who wanted to see them live.
