We don’t really need more proof that a good guy with a gun is the best way to stop more mass shootings from happening, but this story once again proves the point.
A Florida deputy is being hailed as a hero after he used his firearm to stop a potential shooting spree. The Taylor County Sheriff’s deputy was getting his vehicle serviced at a Ford dealership when a man crashed into the front of the store, got out of his vehicle, and started shooting.
The shooter, 51-year-old Earl Edward Clague Jr., was using a semi-automatic shotgun when Deputy Robert Lundy intervened and began to engage the suspect with his service firearm.
The deputy shot and killed the suspect, but he was injured in the gunfight himself. After going through surgery Deputy Lundy is in stable but critical condition.
Two employees of the dealership were shot but they are expected to survive. Three others were taken to the hospital as well, but they did not have gun shot wounds and were probably hurt while scrambling for cover in the gunfight.
No motive has been given at this time, but the shooter had been an employee at the dealership for at least 15 years. In his mad attempt to take out as many lives as possible he did not take into account that a good guy with a gun would be there.
According to Tallahassee.com,
Lundy, who has been with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office for 10 years, was in duty and was having his patrol car serviced at the time.
Normally there are between 10 to 20 people in the store at a time.
“We know that his actions today saved the lives of many citizens,” Plessinger said.
No clear motive has been established.
“We are investigating. That’s one of the things the investigation will show,” Plessinger said. “We’re conducting interviews and building a timeline and working on the crime scene right now.”
There remains other unknowns such as the amount of ammunition the man had with him. Clague was driving a black Nissan truck.
This could have been a mass shooting with many left dead at the dealership, but police radio reports show that the whole ordeal was over in under a minute.
Since the shooter was killed so quickly it saved lives and also probably means that this story will not make national news. If the the shooter had been able to carry out his malicious plans this story would most assuredly be on CNN tonight, but because a gun was used to STOP a mass shooting from happening, this story will probably be ignored.
In the end, only the shooter died, and it’s only because someone with a gun was there to stop him.
Similarly, the Arapahoe High School shooter was stopped from carrying out his mass killings because someone was there with a gun to stop him as well.
