Details are still sketchy from an active shooter situation that took place today at Fort Hood. But again we have a tragic shooting in a place where guns are strictly regulated. We have just discovered from an interview with a General at the base that the shooter used an unregistered gun to carry out these lethal attacks.
Gun rules were tightened after the 2009 shootings at Fort Hood in which Major Nidal Hassan killed 13 and wounded 32 after he had become a radical Muslim. These new rules required both soldiers and civilians to register their weapons and declare them at the gate. So each gun would have to be declared and a registration piece of paper would have to be shown.
The shooter in this case used an unregistered .45 Smith & Wesson and had already broken the rules by just entering the base with his weapon.
At least 4 are dead, including the shooter, and 14 are injured after a man dressed in full soldier uniform began shooting at the Ford Hood military base. So far sources are saying that the incident was not related to terrorism and was a “soldier on soldier” event.
According to Foxnews,
Senior U.S. officials confirmed the shooter’s identity as Spc. Ivan Lopez, who was based at Ft. Hood, which was also the scene of a deadly shooting in 2009 that left 13 dead.
Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly on “The Kelly File” the “knowledge I have is he was a truck driver.”
Carter also said the shooter was reported to be in full uniform and “it was reported to me most, if not all, the victims were in uniform.”
He also said he had been told the shooter died of self-inflicted wounds.
President Obama said the U.S. government will get to the bottom of what happened in the shooting, and said officials are doing everything they can to make sure everyone is secure.
“We’re heartbroken that something like this might’ve happened again,” Obama said.
There are still a lot of details yet to come forth, but so far it looks like more gun regulation has failed to protect innocent lives from a mad man.
After the Naval Yard shooting we called for an end to Bill Clinton’s gun ban on military bases. It’s absolutely unconscionable how we can allow our men and women in uniform to carry guns and protect themselves overseas but we disarm them when here at home.
