This ad comes on the heels of a story we just reported on with Carol Bowne being stabbed to death while waiting for her gun purchase permit to clear.
And now Gabby Gifford’s gun control group with the the greatest misnomer of all time — Americans for Responsible Solutions — is fighting a bill in North Carolina that would have possibly saved Bowne’s life in New Jersey. Bowne waited for more than 4 weeks for her purchase permit to clear, and a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend did not stop him from killing her.
Now the gun control group (they prefer “gun safety” group) is running an attack ad in North Carolina to try to say that House Bill 562 will do away with background checks, all while ignoring what the bill ACTUALLY does.
Here is the statement from the ad:
“As a sheriff for 28 years, I fought to keep our communities safe,” Gay says in the new ad. “But right now, some in the legislature want to repeal background checks on handguns. This will make it easier for criminals and the mentally ill to get guns. … Tell the folks in Raleigh we need to keep background checks.”
Wait a minute. Do you see what the sheriff said in this ad? Yes, it’s a flat out lie. HB 562 does NOT do away with background checks, as they are a federal mandate. What it does do is get rid of a purchase permit requirement which is a Jim Crow era arbitrary system of the sheriff’s office being able to deny someone the ability to purchase a handgun for any reason they want, while extended the period of time it takes to legally be able to protect oneself. This is the same kind of system that denied Carol Bowne the ability to possess a firearm before she was killed.
Anyone purchasing a gun in NC would still have to go through a background check if this bill is passed. The ad fails to also point out where less gun control has led to fewer homicides in many cities, while cities with strict gun control i.e. Chicago and NYC have seen an increase in murders.
So why is the gun control group trying to pretend this bill eliminates background checks if that’s not the case at all? Easy. That’s the only way they can trick people into being against the bill. If they actually told the truth about House Bill 562, they would have everyone calling up NC lawmakers to demand this bill gets passed.
State Rep. Jacqueline Schaffer (R-Charlotte), sponsor of HB 562, explained to the Charlotte Observer that the archaic system of each sheriff having to sign off on each individual purchase permit has many in NC worried.
“There are a lot of individuals around the state who feel they are arbitrarily denied a permit by a sheriff. So if we go to a standardized system, people feel that would be a more fair system.”
All it takes is for one sheriff in NC to have a personal ideology against citizens owning firearms and you can expect longer purchase permit waits and arbitrary denials.
