Once again a Facebook picture has gone viral and stirred up some controversy on the gun debate. And try as they might to avoid getting involved int he gun debate this Girl Scouts group has found themselves in the thick of it.
The picture shows some Girl Scouts at their table selling cookies, and along side them are a couple of adults carrying semi-automatic rifles (not “assault rifles” as some ignorantly like to call them).
According to myfoxdfw.com,
The adults are part of the gun-rights group, Open Carry Texas, which held an event in Fort Worth over the weekend.
The local Girl Scout council responded to the controversy, saying, “A Tweet featuring adults with firearms at a GS-TOP Cookie Booth posted on January 26 has recently gone viral. Our council did NOT know about this. We did NOT endorse this.”
“Girl Scouts is not a political organization and we do not advocate on any position. Further, neither girls nor volunteers are allowed to promote another organization in their role with Girl Scouts. When working in an official capacity, both girls and adults are to uphold the Girl Scout Promise and Law in all they say and do.”
It is legal to open carry rifles in Texas, so we are not sure why the Girl Scout’s organization felt it necessary to say that adults must uphold the law in all they say and do. Either they are ignorant of what is legal and what is not, or while trying to stay neutral in this gun debate, they have revealed their hand.
It appears that the organization’s tone is not so much against the adults promoting another organization as much as it is the fact the adults were actually carrying guns with children present.
Looks like another example of an organization “trying” to stay neutral on the gun debate but failing to uphold constitutional rights. Maybe we are reading into this, but what do you think?
