David Hills is a homeowner in Akron Ohio that has been arrested for manslaughter after defending his life and home when two robbers broke into his home and held him at gunpoint. He fatally shot Marcus Glover with a single shot to the head while the other thug was arrested shortly thereafter.
Hills turned himself in on Monday and appeared in court. His bond of $50,000 was posted by a close relative. He has since been release and and is now wearing an ankle bracelet. All of this because he shot an attacker that held him at gunpoint. The body of the dead robber was found in the backyard of a neighbor two houses down.
The story is that Glover and Tart broke into David Hills home on August 7th. Hills was held at gunpoint until he grabbed his gun and panicked the two thugs. As they ran Hills ran after them not wanting to worry about his life and home in the future. He was able to shoot Glover in the head.
While claiming the Castle Doctrine and self defense for his actions, Lt. Rick Edwards said that this does not apply to the case since he “chased them out of the house”.
“You’re not protected by the Castle Doctrine when the suspects flee your home or your property and your life is no longer in danger,” Edwards said. “In this case, the suspects took off running from the house.”
Michael Hill is the father of David, and he is furious over the events that have taken place in his son’s life.
“David was in fear for his life. These guys could have come back at any given time for the next six months when he was sleeping in the house,” Michael Hillis said. “When your life is threatened or you feel that others have threatened you, you have every right to defend yourself.”
Here is the startling part. Tart was also charged with aggravated burglary and murder. He gets the murder charge for being a co-conspirator in a home invasion that led to the death of another person.
So the home owner and the home invader are both facing charges. Does anybody else see a problem here?
The Father is also due to appear in court for a preliminary hearing after a NewsChannnel5 crews captured several police officers tackling Michael Hillis while warning him several times to calm down.
David’s father said the officers overreacted while he was trying to see his son. “That’s all I wanted to see was his presence, his well being and know that he was okay,” Michael said.
