In Talladega, Alabama a registered sex offender decided to break into his neighbor’s house. But perhaps he didn’t know his neighbor was a gun owner who was not about to let anything happen to his wife.
Thursday morning between 4 and 4am, Jimmy Lee Garrett (48), broke into the couple’s house right next door to him.
According to Talladega County Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore, a female resident told investigators she woke up and saw Garrett in her kitchen.
At that point, she yelled for her husband, who began chasing Garrett throughout their home while holding a gun in his hand.
The husband shot at the intruder twice, hitting him in the foot once.
Garrett was taken to Citizens Baptist Medical Center for treatment and then was taken to the Talladega County Jail, where he was held on a $30,000 bond.
The homeowner is not expected to face any charges in this case.
According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety, Garrett was in compliance with sex offender reporting procedures. Garrett was released April 21, 2013, from prison for previous offenses.
Kilgore said there was at least one child inside the residence, but noted the only person harmed was Garrett.
Sheriff Kilgore also said,
“He was a resident and he was protecting his home from an intruder”
