A couple homeowners and their elderly mother were not expecting any company early yesterday morning, but they did have a plan in place for defending themselves.
A man who broke into an Orange County home was fatally shot by the homeowner early Tuesday.
Police said about 1 a.m., a man broke into a home in the 7900 block of South County Road 700 East in Hardinsburg.
The homeowners heard the entry and moved their 86-year-old mother into a bedroom to protect her.
They then went downstairs to find the intruder. One of the homeowners opened a cellar door to find the intruder, 23-year-old Jacob Grimes, of Paoli.
According to the police report, Grimes punched the homeowner in the stomach and the two began fighting.
The other homeowner heard the dispute and saw Grimes, who was holding a knife, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a bandana over his face.
The homeowner shot Grimes with a handgun. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is under investigation by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police.
