In another clear example how criminals ignore gun signs on storefront windows, the crook in this story ignored a sign at a Dollar General which said “This business does not allow open carry of firearms”.
But that didn’t stop Kevin McLaughlin of Orrville, Alabama from entering the store and waving a gun around while trying to escort a customer and cashier into a backroom at gun point.
Meanwhile, that customer that did follow the store’s policy also had a concealed gun on his person. Before the customer could be locked in the breakroom he pulled out his concealed weapon and shot McLaughlin once in the chest.
According to wect.com,
“He escorted a customer who was trying to leave the store and a cashier toward a break room. The cashier went in first and the customer went in behind her, and the individual had the gun on the customer and the customer had a pistol concealed in a holster,” Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman said. “And when the customer got to the door, he turned around and shot the individual.”
McLaughlin was pronounced dead at the scene. The tense ordeal played out in less than five minutes, police said.
The sheriff said that it doesn’t look like this was an attempted robbery since the gunman never demanded any money, and that probably made the situation even more serious. Here you have a bad guy with a gun pointing a gun at people and forcing them into a back room. And if he didn’t want money his motives might have been even more sinister.
But thanks to the quick thinking of a gun carrying citizen, no one else was hurt or killed and the bad guy was stopped.
“I don’t know why he went in there waving a gun at the people. Whatever reason he went in there for, it was very serious. Anytime someone goes into store and points guns at people, then anybody in the store has the right to use deadly force against that person,” DA Michael Jackson said.
