While anti-gun lawmakers begrudge the idea of guns being allowed in restaurants and bars, here is a story in which an armed bystander was able to stop a mass shooting simply because he was armed.
The gunman who entered the Portland, Oregon gentleman’s club did not care about obeying the law when he brought a gun into the strip club and began shooting. The law did not stop him, and even a security guard who was shot in the incident could not stop him. But an armed bystander DID stop him.
According to KGW.com the shooting occurred Saturday night at Mystic Gentleman’s Club when the shooter entered the building and opened fire.
The shooter hit three people, prompting a person in the bar to return fire, hitting and critically injuring the suspect.
Brian Rizzo, a 26-year-old male security guard from the club, was hit by the shooter and was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Gonzalo Zamora-Hernandez, 31, and Nichole Procter, 27, were treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries, Simpson said.
The shooter was not identified and he remains in critical but stable condition at a Portland hospital.
The person who returned fire and hit the suspect was not arrested and was cooperating with police.
Who knows how many people the gunman could have shot if he was not stopped by a good guy with a gun. Remember, 911 is only useful after incidents like this and the police are usually only there in time to draw chalk lines around bodies. When seconds count, it’s a good guy with a gun who can stop the bad guy with the gun.
Police reports have stated that this was not gang related so it looks like the gunman was acting on his own, making it more probably that this could have turned into a mass killing had the shooter not been stopped.
