The app is called Geo Gun Marker and enables users to pick from 1 of 4 options about a gun owner in their area that they have been spying on or are at least suspicious of. The four options they can choose are:
- “Possible unlocked/loaded/unsafe storage”
- “Guns and unsupervised children”
- “Documented/frequent unlawful discharge”
- “Possible anti-government/terror threat”
The app’s creator says the purpose of this app is for parents to protect their children from gun owners who don’t practice safe firearm use and to give the communities a better sense of where the irresponsible gun owners are.
The app’s creator may be disappointed to know that many users have already randomly marked certain locations so that the app has very little credibility anyway. But for those criminals that may want to use the app to find guns that are not locked up the app can prove to be a very useful tool.
But every gun owner should be alarmed that he or she could be falsely identified as an irresponsible gun owner because of a neighbor or friend who is anti-gun and on Bloomberg’s gun control bandwagon.
The marketing guidelines for the app say:
“…unlocked, loaded or carelessly stored weapons should generally be treated with concern by friends, neighbors and visitors. The locations of such careless owners should probably be marked so that others can make an informed decision.”
The app allows users to be anonymous when reporting gun owners, which is ironic since the app exploits the privacy of gun owners and makes them greater targets of theft or derision.
If you feel like expressing your concerns about the app you can either leave a review on the Google Play store or call a number that the app creator setup so people can voice their concerns. That number is (225) 267-7346.
