The anti-gun lawmakers in Washington were not able to get their gun control legislation passed, so now they are pushing for gun control the old fashioned way, through taxes.
Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) has co-sponsored a bill with Danny K. Davis, (D-Ill) that would increase the taxes on guns and ammunition.
With the Gun Violence Prevention and Safe Communities Act, the taxes on gun purchases would double from 10% to 20%. For ammunition, Pascrell is pushing for an increase from 11% to 50%.
“The tax on handguns was last increased in 1955,” said Pascrell. “Worse yet, the tax rate on ammunition and other types of firearms has remained the same since 1941. Now we got to make priorities here.”
This new push for excessive tax increases on guns and ammo may mark a change in the approach of anti-gun politicians. They are assuming that the same style of excessive taxes on tobacco will result in fewer guns, less ammo, and less gun crime.
But a 50% tax on ammunition is tantamount to “infringing” on 2nd amendment rights. It’s like hiking up the tax on ink to limit free speech.
According to CBS, Pascrell is also saying that his tax hike proposals will bring in a lot of extra revenue to help push his anti-gun agenda even more. He says his plan would bring in an extra 600 million in revenue.
Ammo is already hard to come by, and it’s just now starting to become more available. If a bill like this were even remotely considered can you imagine how impossible it would be to get your hands on the stuff?
More than likely this bill is dead on arrival, but it gives us a glimpse into the forthcoming strategy of the anti-gun legislators.
Would you pay a 50% tax on your ammo? Or if this were really the case, would you have a choice?
