The best way to protect the people at the park from violent criminals is to make sure the officer’s hired to protect those people don’t have guns. If that does not make sense to you then you at least have more common sense than New York City, that recently decided that Park Enforcement Officers (PEP) don’t really need guns to do their job.
The Parks Enforcement Union is begging for NYC to allow the officers to have guns, especially after last weeks stabbing at Riverside Park South that injured five people – including a toddler.
These officers can make arrests, they can carry batons, they can carry mace, and they can carry handcuffs.
“If you’re not armed, you’re unable and ill-equipped to handle crime,” said Parks Enforcement Union Local 983 president Joe Puleo.
The criminals in the park have the upper hand against unarmed officers and it’s clearly a less safe environment for the people in the park to have emboldened violent offenders walking the parks.
“Usually we’re the first responders, because we’re there,” Puleo said. “Many times, these people have knives, razorblades, even firearms and we’ve just been fortunate, But it’s just a matter of time before our luck runs out.”
In it’s attempt to be as anti-gun as possible, NYC is making a political move that actually endangers the lives of the PEP officers and those who fall victim to violence crimes in the parks. Deciding that park officers do not need guns while knowing that criminals who break the law can readily bring guns into the parks is remarkable sign of willing ignorance.
CBS reported on the NYC park stabbings that took place last week, saying that the offender was emotionally disturbed.
Police said Jessica Lipps, 32, was attacked. James Fayette, 34, was slashed, and his 18-month-old son, Luke, also had his left arm slashed. Ben Loehnen, 35, was stabbed in the abdomen, and Deanna Koestel, 36, was stabbed in the back while jogging.
If NYC expects PEP officers to stop this kind of violence they had better enable their officer’s to be able to carry the necessary tools to do so. Give ’em guns!
