The anti-gun lawmakers are not happy that the Toomey-Manchin background check bill was a failure. Now it looks like the president will try to make good on his promise to use executive order and any means possible to see his policies move forward.
Gun Owners of America has reported that Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who is the head of The Department of Health and Human Services, is pushing for executive order that will violate doctor-patient confidentiality.
Basically, the key author of Obamacare is pushing for doctors and therapists to report you to the government if you have depression, anxiety, or even stress over handling your finances. In fact, they want the doctors to be required to report you.
If you don’t think this could ever happen, take a quick look at California that already has a database of “prohibited persons” and they plan to act on it. The state just announced plans to use $20 million to confiscate over 40,000 legally acquired guns from people who it says have become “prohibited persons”.
This has actually already happened according to reporter Dan Roberts who said one individual “received a letter from the Pistol Permit Department informing him that his license was immediately revoked upon information that he was seeing a therapist for anxiety and had been prescribed an anxiety drug. He was never suicidal, never violent, and has no criminal history.”
You don’t have to be a gun owner to be upset about these measures either. If this is not shot down in court your doctor could be required to turn you in for the benefit of the greater public.
A greater harm can be in people not visiting the doctor that need to, just because they are afraid the doctor will report them to the government because they have a little too much anxiety.
So if you feel like fighting back against this executive order decision, Guns Owners of America has provided some information on how to do so.
ACTION: Go to the Federal Register – at http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-04-23/pdf/2013-09602.pdf – and respond to the regs entitled “HIPAA Privacy Rule and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).”
Let the HHS know how you feel about waiving all federal privacy laws for people who seek counseling.
Also, be sure to tell your congressmen that you oppose the “see a shrink, lose your guns” regs issued by the HHS. Ask him to issue his own comments as well.
The regs themselves lay out several ways that you may submit your opposition. The comment period ends on June 7, 2013.
