A Texas high school student armed with a rifle and two handguns was arrested after his parents alerted school officials and took prompt action.
According to local media reports out of San Antonio Texas, a Madison High School student was arrested for carrying an AK-47 style rifle and two handguns to school, a .45 and a .22 handgun.
The parents of the student alerted the school officials right away and came to the school, confronting their son and getting him to turn over his firearms which were taken from his home.
Details are still forthcoming in this incident and no motives have been given yet, but it appears the student had some demands and was going to use the firearms if those demands were not met.
According to My San Antonio,
It is unknown whether he was planning a mass shooting, but Chancellor said he told district police that he intended to make some demands over the intercom system, although she did not know what those were. He told authorities that “if the demands were not met, he had planned on committing violence,” Chancellor said. She did not know whether he had a history of violence or mental health issues.
“Everyone is safe,” Chancellor said.
The student’s parents had reported him as a runaway that morning and arrived at the school after it was determined that he was there, Chancellor said. During a meeting with school officials and their son, the student’s parents asked that his backpack be checked, Chancellor said. After finding two loaded guns and the knife, his parents asked him where the third gun was, Chancellor said.
It’s the parents taking action right away that kept this from turning into a terrible tragedy. We don’t know how the student obtained the guns in the first place or how they were secured at home, but this is a clear example of how a tragedy can be stopped by simply paying attention.
