According to the Supreme Court in Oregon resident’s in Portland have the right to bear arms for self-defense. After all, that’s what the state constitution says. But if you want to carry a loaded firearm, well that’s just breaking the law.
The ABA Journal just reported that a ban on carrying loaded guns was upheld by the Oregon Supreme Court as constitutional.
The panel of justices agreed that the city ordinance was not too far reaching and that residents can still have loaded guns in their homes, just not in public places.
Along with the ordinance is a long list of exceptions to the ban, which include exceptions for police officers, concealed weapons holders, hunters, and people traveling to a gun range.
“In the United States, generally it has been recognized that the right to bear arms is not absolute and that the exercise of legislative authority reasonably restricting the right to bear arms to promote public safety is constitutionally permissible,” the Supreme Court opinion said.
