Wilson Public Schools Superintendent Eric Smith has made an executive decision to allow 5 teachers to train with their own weapons and carry them concealed during school days, and we could not be happier.
The Superintendent along with the High School Principal, AG Instructor, Technology Director, and the Elementary Principal have all volunteered to take the three 21 hour classes required to carry their concealed weapon on their person during the school days. The beginning of the instruction will include unarmed security procedures, rules, and regulations.
“We approached the board last spring when the law changed,” Smith said. “We talked on and off about it and started last night. We also began understanding the verbiage they want on reports.”
Each individual will be using their own weapon while the school will be paying for the classes they are taking.
Why the sudden change in this local school policy? The Superintendent made it clear that is was in response to the the changes that have taken effect in society.
“It’s just the fact of the matter,” he said. “So much is happening worldwide. There have been a lot of changes since we were in school.”
They are merely planning for the worst case scenario, and these days that certainly isn’t a bad thing. Police response will not and has not been as rapid as needed in most situations where school shootings occur. Having an armed faculty will drastically cut down on the response time to such a horrible crime.
“A school shooting situation, even in a small town like Wilson, it is over when the police department arrives,” the high school principal Gary Labeth said. “A tactical team would take 15 minutes coming out of Ardmore. It’s just another level of protection.”
We couldn’t agree more. While the multiple classes being taken by the school faculty may seem like a bit much, every minute of it will be needed if the need to use deadly force ever becomes necessary.
“I hope we never have to use it,” Smith said. “I hope it’s a deterrent. That being said, when those kids are here, they are ours and I will do anything to protect them.”
