When a couple of shoplifters tried to rip off a store in a Glendale, Arizona mall it was not the loss prevention officer that fired at them. In fact, the unarmed officer found himself at gunpoint when he tried to stop the pair of shoplifters.
It all began when the unarmed loss prevention officer tried to detain the thieves. One of the suspects, a woman, drew a handgun from her backpack and pointed it at the officer.
Meanwhile a 61-year-old man was sitting in the parking lot waiting on his wife to finish her shopping in the mall. He saw what was happening and saw his wife exiting the store from the same entrance as the officer.
“Fearing for the safety of his wife and the loss prevention officer, the male fired his handgun an unknown number of times toward the armed suspect. There are witnesses who indicate that either one or more of the shoplifting suspects may have been hit by the gunfire. Both of the shoplifting suspects then got onto a black motorcycle and fled the area,” stated Glendale Police Sgt. Jay O’Neill.
The police found a motorcycle that matched the the description of the suspect’s getaway vehicle parked at a nearby apartment, but so far the suspects are still at large. If they did indeed suffer gun shot wounds from the armed citizen it will be easier to track them down if they show up at any area hospitals.
O’Neill said that at this time it is not known if charges will be brought against the man who fired shots at the suspects.
“This incident took place outside of the mall and there was never any closure of the mall, or the Sears store other than in the immediate vicinity of the incident,” stated O’Neill. “We are also unable to confirm whether or not either of the shoplifting suspects were struck by gunfire from the bystander and at this point in the investigation have no definitive information in either direction.”
