It has been hard to miss the back and forth debate between Russia and the US lately. After Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized President Obama for calling America “exceptional”, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Russia’s parliament went a step further by using the Navy Yard shooting to take another shot at the US.
“A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington — a lone gunman and seven corpses. Nobody’s even surprised anymore. A clear confirmation of American exceptionalism,” the chairman said.
For those that don’t know, Russia has an extremely strict gun policy and it’s been estimated that less than 10% of the population actually own guns. In fact, according to Gunpolicy.org there are only about 9 guns per 100 people in Russia. Compare that with about 100 guns per 100 people in the US. So obviously Russia’s murder rate must be MUCH lower than in the US, right? Wrong!
Even though the US has a population that more than doubles that of Russia, there were almost twice the number of homicides in Russia than in the US in 2009. The FBI reported that there were 13,636 homicides in the US in 2009. How did Russia fare in that same year? Russia saw 21,603 killings in 2009 according to the most recent statistics.
Russia has been a gun control paradise for those who love to make owning a gun has hard as possible and has some of the strictest gun laws in the planet. According to a recent NPR article there is a lot of red tape for anyone to own a gun in the country.
“It’s illegal for Russian citizens to own automatic and semi-automatic guns. It’s possible to apply for a handgun or shotgun license, though citizens are required to provide reasons such as hunting or target shooting.
Applicants face strict background checks, including criminal history, a full psychological evaluation and a medical exam. They must pass a test on firearm laws and safety.
Each weapon is then registered by the police during a home visit. Police take bullet patterns, test bullets and cartridges so bullets can be matched if the gun is used in a crime. A license lasts five years, after which applicants must go through the whole process again.
In spite of these laws, the country does have periodic mass shootings by people thought to be mentally ill.”
So before you think that gun control will actually stop people from killing each other or even lower the numbers, remember that gun control laws ONLY stop law abiding citizens from defending themselves and embolden criminals.
If all the gun grabbers were actually correct in their “facts” the US should have a murder rate that is 10 times as high as it is now instead of a declining murder rate even as gun sales go through the roof in every state. Just something to think about the next time you hear Putin criticize the US and our 2nd amendment.
