Anti-gunners see Russia as a prime example of what gun control should look like in the United States. After all, handguns are not allowed in the hands of private citizens, most rifles are heavily restricted, and criminal and mental health checks are mandatory before anyone can purchase a firearm.
In fact, Russia has far fewer guns than the US and yet sees more homicides per year. According to gunpolicy.org Russians own about 13 million firearms while Americans own about 300 million. If more guns equal more crime then it sure is not evident in the numbers.
And despite much stricter gun control laws in Russia, the country saw a deadly school shooting today in which at least 2 people died and 20 others were held hostage by a gunman.
According to reports the shooter was a student in the school who might have had a disagreement with a teacher.
This kind of thing simply isn’t supposed to happen in a country with such strict gun control measures. But the simple truth that anti-gunners seem to always forget is that as long as there are evil people in this world tragedies will happen. But what it more tragic is taking away a person’s right to defend himself against such evil.
By the way, in 2009, the United States saw 13,636 homicides. In Russia there were 21,603 homicides. Even with a nation with less than half the population of the United States a country with strict gun control laws did not solve it’s problem by banning guns. And neither will we.
