SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man who shot and killed an intruder Tuesday morning says he did it to protect his family.
Dmitri Brown was with his girlfriend and four children when three men broke into their apartment at the Wood Hollow apartment complex on Sahara Drive. One of the men held Brown at gunpoint while the other two began taking items from the apartment.
Brown says two of the four children were able to get away, but Brown’s girlfriend and two other children remained inside during the attack. Brown managed to grab his own gun and fired a shot at one of the suspects, killing him. He also fired at the other two suspects who got away.
“I did what I had to do,” says Brown. “I protected my family. No hesitation, and I apologize for taking somebody’s father, somebody’s son, somebody’s brother.” “If you can do this to somebody in front of kids, you’ll do it to anybody,” says Brown’s girlfriend, Vangie Tubig.
“I feel sorry for the dead person’s mother, his family, but I have no remorse. I have no remorse.”
Neighbors we spoke with say there has been a rise in crime in the area. Brown says he’s not surprised at the violence. “It’s just embedded in the human gene,” he says. “It’s crazy. It’s kill or be killed out here.”
Brown and his family were not hurt. San Antonio police say it’s early in the investigation but it does not appear Brown will face any charges. The identity of the home invasion suspect who was killed has not been released.
