A U.S. soldier who was deployed to Afghanistan two years ago asked a friend to watch over his Florida home, but then ex-convicts moved in, changed the locks, and now the sheriff’s office says the soldier can’t get his house back.
Army specialist Michael Sharkey left his home in the care of his friend, Lisa Pettus. She said the squatters moved in and have “renovated” the house. The squatters, Julio Ortiz and his girlfriend Fatima Cardoso, told police they made a “verbal agreement” with Pettus to live in the home rent free while they were renovating it, then a rental agreement would be worked out after.
Pettus said this never happened. Instead, she hired Ortiz to do some handiwork while Sharkey was overseas. Two months after the work was completed, she stopped by the house and found the squatters living in the home.
“I want the people out. They’re criminals living in my house,” Sharkey told local reporters via video chat from Hawaii, where he’s currently stationed. “I have never spoke to these people in my life.”
The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office says the squatters have established residency in the home, and that it could not remove the couple without a court ordered eviction.
Mr. Sharkey was obviously unsatisfied with this response. “Basically what you’re telling me is just because they’re in the house and they took up residence, they can live there,” he said. “Okay, so I can go down the street and find an empty house and just kick in the door and start living there and that’s my residence. I don’t think that would work.”
“I don’t think I should have to pay hundreds of dollars and go through that aggravation…I work hard, long hours, and these people never had permission to live in my home. They should be thrown out,” Sharkey said.
He also emphasized that if he obtains an eviction notice, the squatters may destroy the home. Both squatters have spent time in prison—Ortiz served time for robbery, car jacking and selling drugs on school property, while Cardoso served time for drug charges.
The squatters have been using buckets for water, as the utilities company refuses to turn on running water without a formal lease.
“They are criminals,” the soldier exclaimed. “I am serving my country, and they have more rights to my home than I do.”
