Rather than facing issues relating to 2nd amendment rights in this country, the Supreme Court has decided to decline hearing arguments against anti-gun laws that restrict these basic constitutional freedoms.
There are several laws on the books that fly in the face of the 2nd amendment and that’s what has stirred the attention of the NRA to take action in asking the Supreme Court to hear these cases. The NRA was behind 2 of the 3 challenges that were made on behalf of gun rights advocates.
One of the cases involves a Texas law that prohibits 18-20 year olds from being allowed to carry guns in public. And of course if anti-gunners can ban guns from this age group they will only seek to ban the carrying of guns in public across the board.
Another case is against a federal law that dates back to 1968 and it makes it illegal for firearms dealers to sell any guns or ammunition to anyone under the age of 21. Considering how many 18-year-olds are serving in our military right now and have automatic weapons put in their hands to serve their country, it seems to be a bit hypocritical to deny them even basic firearm rights at home.
According to Reuters,
The third case was on the narrow question of whether consumers have the legal right to challenge laws that regulate the sale of firearms. The challenge to a federal law that restricts the interstate transport of guns, and a related Virginia law, were filed by several District of Columbia residents who wished to obtain guns via neighboring Virginia.
The court has yet to decide whether there is a right to carry guns in public, a question left unanswered in its two most recent gun-related decisions.
In the 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller case, the court held that the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guaranteed an individual right to bear arms. Two years later in McDonald v. City of Chicago, the court held that the earlier ruling applied to the states.
While this was not a win for gun rights advocates it highlights the broader question on whether or not the Supreme Court has become too powerful and political. We encourage your comments in the section below.
