In January of this year, the Union Grove ISD voted to allow select teachers and school administrators to arm themselves. This came with overwhelming support from the community.
In fact, when the board invited the parents to come express their views on their decision, every hand went up when asked if they supported this new policy.
The policy states that only those school employees who have obtained and maintain a current license to carry a concealed handgun, in accordance with state law, are eligible to be selected. Additionally, it states that any employee who is authorized to possess a gun must complete — at the district’s expense — additional training in crisis intervention, management of hostage situations and other “relevant” training the board determines necessary.
Additionally it will not be known which teachers and administrators are carrying firearms. The guns will be either on the teacher’s persons or locked in specific locations in the building.
“The worst thing we can do is nothing,”
Union Grove school board Vice President Rusty Dyar said.
“I think that I speak for most everybody here — if not 100 percent — that I’m very happy to know that y’all are being so proactive, so thank you,”
Shara Stanley said in addressing the school board.
“It was nice to get that note and read it and just say, ‘Whoa, they are thinking about my child.’ Not that there was really any doubt, but it was confirmation that the safety of our children is paramount.”
Union Grove ISD, a Class 2A school district in rural Upshur County with 761 students, is only the second district in Texas to enact such a policy. The first was Harrold ISD in 2007. But we expect many more to follow suit.
This is the proper and sensible way to deal with the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school shooting. Why? Because it actually addresses STOPPING the gunman instead of using those tragic events as an excuse to propagate more anti-gun policies.
As soon as someone with a gun showed up at Sanday Hook the shooter stopped killing kids and shot himself. Imagine if someone with a gun had been there sooner. Who knows how many more lives it would have saved.
These lunatics are sissies at heart and so they choose targets that they know will not be able to resist. Well it’s time we start resisting!
The only reason for being against having armed guards and administrators in schools is if you have a twisted view of guns and blindly will support any anti-gun legislation, even at the detriment to our constitutional rights. Groups that talk about wanting “sensible gun control” measures but really just mean more gun laws for the law abiding should start paying attention. The truly sensible thing to do is protect our kids, and you don’t do that by enacting more senseless laws that do nothing.
You protect them with guns. After all, the police did not run into Sandy Hook with pepper spray cans, baseball bats and whistles.
