One man and a teenage young man are in custody after they attempted to rob an undercover police officer at gunpoint. Here is how the story unfolded.
There had been multiple armed robberies in the area of Buchanan in Gary Indiana after people tried to buy an iPhone off of the app “Offerup”. After police had heard of the problem a few separate occasions they came up with the idea of having one of their own contacting the same ad to “purchase a iPhone”.
So they put up an undercover detective to the task and a meeting was set up on the app. The detective arrived to find a 18 year old man and a 17 year old teenager in a truck.
As they started to discuss the phone he was there to purchase, sure enough the two of them pulled out their weapons and ordered the detective to hand over his keys and get on the ground. They also demanded he hand over his phone and the marked cash the officer had brought to purchase the phone.
Cue the officers in waiting… As the officers moved in the two suspects managed to escape momentarily until the the K-9 unit came in to aid in the search.
When the two were finally apprehended they found the marked cash, phone, and the two handguns they had used in the robbery. The Gary PD are urging people to use caution when meeting with a stranger to make a purchase.
We continue to urge citizens to stay armed and stay accurate. Criminals are using different ways to rob the unsuspecting.
