While other anti-gun states are trying to figure out how to take away guns from law abiding citizens by using the Sandy Hook shootings for political purposes, Utah is actually doing something to protect their school children. Read source for this article here.
There are many Utah teachers that have already armed themselves in the classroom so they don’t have to be left helpless in a shooting situation. And the state of Utah is behind them as a January poll states that 59% of Utah residents support allowing school workers to carry firearms.
But you won’t find these armed teachers waving their guns around and announcing who they are. In fact, they wish to remain anonymous as they carry their concealed weapons, and their students will never even know if they are carrying.
They also know that revealing their identities would give a crazed criminal an advantage and could cause a backlash with some parents and school administrators.
Since these teachers have concealed-firearm permits they are not obligated to tell anyone about their firearms, not even the school officers or principal. And when asked if they are carrying most of them simply lie about it.
But as concealed weapon permit holders in Utah they have already undergone background checks (in addition to the school’s background check), a 4 hour firearms safety course, and they must renew this permit every 5 years.
An unidentified Utah teacher made this comment in an interview and we think it just about sums up the whole debate:
“I can think of nothing worse than having to witness my students being killed or maimed without me being able to at least attempt some sort of intervention. I might even die in the process, but, in my opinion, going down shooting would be better than standing in front of them helplessly.”
Our lawmakers don’t seem to understand that gun-free zones are not the answer. A place where a criminals is promised he will not face any resistance is like a magnet to a psychopath, whether he is using a gun, knife, or any other weapon.
Not only do these Utah schools make the chances of a mass shooting more unlikely, but if a shooting ever did happen there the teachers and students would not be completely helpless and at the mercy of the shooter and the 10 minute wait until the police arrived.
