Lexington Police are investigating a robbery that happened at a tobacco store.
Police say two men robbed Tobacco Zone on North Broadway around 7:00p.m according to WKYT.
The store clerks say they had just locked the front door, like they do each day when it starts getting dark outside because of recent robberies.
Zara Adil explained,” One customer decided to leave and unlocked the door on his way out, meanwhile the robbers came in the door and went towards the office. I wasn’t sure what they were doing at first until one came around to the register and the other one started ushering everyone out of the store.”
The 21-year-old clerk says that is when the robber armed with a gun told her to come around to the register and demanded cash.
“While he struggled to get money out of the drawer he laid the gun down, I grabbed it and told him to leave or I’d shoot and the other robber ran away,” she said.
The clerk says she did not hesitate when a struggle between the two broke out as she was standing up for the business owned by her family.
“We work 12-15 hours a day. It is just quick cash for them but for us it is hard earned money and my mom works all day here,” said Adil.
During the struggle Adil says she fired one shot at his shoulder and then was able to pull off his mask.
“Turns out it someone who had been here before. I asked him why he was doing this and he said just let me go. I told him not to touch the money on his way out,” she said.
That is when another brief struggle broke out before he ran out of the store empty handed.
It is an act that Adil’s mom says made her both proud and terrified, because she knows it could have ended much differently.
Adil says unfortuantely this crime is something many in the area are becoming used to which is another reason she chose to fight back and she hopes something is done to slow down this trend.
She said, “With the things that go on here nothing scares me anymore…these people do not show respect, the do not know respect. If stricter punishment is given maybe it will teach these robbers a lesson.”
The clerk has some scratches and bruises but is expected to be okay.
Lexington Police have issued an arrest warrant for Darnell Thomas, Jr., 30, in connection with this robbery.
Officers have not said if they believe this case is connected to the 15 other business robberies they are working, however they do say they are investigating it with that possibility.
