Jay Leno knows better than to get into a logical debate on gun control, and so in this interview you can see how quickly he shifts topics in stead of offering a reply to Ted Cruz’s answers. Leno is seen as one of the least liberal of the talk show hosts, but that did not keep him from using the same old talking points that all the anti-gunners spew out.
The most intriguing part of this interview is actually the audience who cheered for the comments Cruz made much more than they agreed with Leno.
Cruz has been an outspoken advocate for 2nd amendment rights, and Leno decided to pounce on that issue using only the regurgitated talking points from his network over at NBC.
In the interview Leno said that any psychopath can march into a gun show and buy a gun without a background check. Anti-gunners like to use this argument for gun control all the time, even though it is completely false. While it is true that certain states allow for the private sale of firearms, gun shows dealers run background checks just like brick and mortar pawn shops and gun stores. Furthermore, it is illegal to sell a gun to someone if they are suspected of being a felon or ineligible of owning a gun.
While Cruz said he supported background checks he points out that all gun control does is go after law abiding citizens instead of the truly violent criminals. Just a fraction of felons and fugitives who tried to buy guns illegally were actually prosecuted (44 out of 48,000). So to go after background checks (which most violent felons avoid anyway) only inconveniences the law abiding gun owner while the criminals scoff at the law and continue to get guns.
