Gun buyers who search the internet through proxies and private servers to ensure privacy and identity protection are now being threatened with termination if they visit the popular gun buying site GunBroker.com.
Gunbroker is now detecting which users are utilizing privacy services like proxies, VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), and Tor (free software which enables free online anonymity).
Any users who are found to be using these services will be given a warning to stop or their accounts will be terminated.
These privacy services hide the physical location of the users by making it look like they are browsing the internet from another location. Some services like Tor even bounce around the users location continuously as they surf.
Many identity theft services and privacy experts recommend using a VPN or proxy to ensure a safer browsing experience and gun buyers especially have legitimate reasons for using such services. Many schools, libraries, or work places may block certain websites and using these services would allow a user to access the gun site. There are even US troops around the world that use Tor and VPNs to access gun related sites.
According to Thefirearmblog.com,
A reader who until now accessed GunBroker through a VPN, with a legitimate reason, was detected by GunBroker. They emailed him saying …
Due to the enormous amount of fraud originating from them, GunBroker.com does not permit access to our system from anonymous proxy servers or any service that disguises your location. If such access is detected again your account may be closed without additional warning.
He explained why he needed to use a VPN and asked if they could make an exception for him. Gunbroker.com replied they would not make exceptions from this policy for anyone.
