Today two Washington D.C. council members stated that they support some kind of mandatory liability insurance for each and every gun owner.
This move would require all potential gun buyers to also buy at least $250,000 in liability insurance that would be used for any non self-defense gun uses and the cost incurred.
A CBS article on this matter said this:
“Some gun-control advocates believe that insurance can help reduce gun violence by encouraging responsible gun ownership, in part through lower rates for gun owners who secure their weapons and maintain a perfect safety record. Insurance would also provide a mechanism to compensate victims of accidental or negligent shootings.”
Think about that for a minute. They are saying that supporters actually believe this will reduce gun violence? Excuse me… is it the law abiding citizens that are wreaking havoc on our streets? Or are the law abiding citizens the ones who are actually helping the police do their job in keeping these criminals off the streets. You can see our growing list of stories with guns used for self defense here.
Several other states are trying to vote through mandatory gun owner insurance as well, but so far none have succeeded.
There are so many problems with this idea it’s hard to know where to begin. First of all, most accidental shootings are already covered by homeowners insurance.
Second, do you really think a criminal is going to buy this insurance? No. It’s just another deterrent to gun owners.
If anything a gun owner should be given a tax credit. After the recent study with how many defensive gun uses there are every year it’s no doubt that for the most part gun owners save lives and deter crime. You can think of us as armed guards who are not paid. So let’s just slap us with insurance that is essentially a tax on something that is our constitutional right.
They might as well try to mandate insurance on the use of free speech on the internet as well, since misinformation can be costly, especially considering hacked Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Maybe instead of worrying how much it costs to let people own guns those council members in DC should start thinking about how many lives they put in danger in DC because of law abiding citizens being so restrained by gun laws.
