Update: Facebook has put out a press release regarding its decision, and it looks like it will not be banning gun related pages at this point.
The anti-gun movement has seen some legislative success in states like Connecticut, New York, and California, but over all more states have seen a push for more gun rights in the last year. And a failure to see any major federal restrictions on firearms and freedom has only angered the anti-gun movement to go after easier targets.
Gun control activists are losing momentum after trying to capitalize on the tragic Sandy Hook shootings. So now groups like Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Mom’s Demand Action are trying to pressure Facebook to restrict both 1st and 2nd amendment rights for its users.
Venture Beat has reported that we may see some changes in the next few weeks regarding Facebook’s policy on gun related pages. And since that could effect pages like ours which merely reports on stories that effect 2nd amendment rights, we felt it necessary to get the word out and suggest you do the same before these pages disappear from FB altogether.
According to Venture Beat,
Facebook may announce company policy changes for gun-related pages in the coming weeks, VentureBeat has learned.
The social network has been under pressure from the powerful Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Moms Demand Action civic group to ban gun-themed fan pages on the site.
Sources close to the conversations told VentureBeat, “Talks are progressing. The discussions are ongoing; there have been positive developments.”
These anti-gun groups are using a handful of examples where a person has acquired a firearm through the social networking site, while ignoring the fact that Facebook already has a policy in place that prohibits the sales of illegal firearms. And as the company has stated, it is not an ecommerce website and does not handle any transactions that take place between individuals.
But that has not stopped these groups from getting a petition going on change.org which seeks to prohibit gun sales on Facebook and Instagram. The petition has over 94,000 signatures.
While this push is to prohibit FB pages which try to sell firearms to its fans, we wouldn’t be surprised if FB pages that are merely on the topic of guns get caught up in the mix and are shut down in the process if these policy changes go through.
After all, these gun control groups are tired of the truth about guns actually getting out there. And there are many pages just like ours that educate citizens on gun ownership, gun laws, and the freedoms the 2nd amendment allows. There are pages like ours with hundreds of thousands and even millions of fans, each one a proud supporter of gun rights. It looks like the gun grabbers would rather shut us down than have an open debate.
Gun control rallies can’t even gather enough people to fill a stage while pro gun rallies see thousands show up. The efforts to force Facebook to shut down gun related pages is just an effort to squelch what is a losing battle for the anti-gun supporters. And while we may see pro-gun pages being banned from the social network, we bet we won’t see a single anti-gun page shut down.
