For the anti-gunners who think that universal background checks will mean that criminals will automatically start obeying the laws, this one might put some holes in that logic.
Police are now saying that the Santa Monica shooter (John Zawahri) was denied being able to buy a firearm by the Justice Department in 2011. And after being denied he was then arrested by police, right? No? Hmm, did he then decide that he would start following the law which forbade him to own a firearm? No again.
Zawahri bought parts from around the country and built his own .223 caliber rifle. And since a gun is simply a piece of metal (or plastic if it’s a 3D printable gun) that has been machined, it’s really not a piece of technology that’s too advanced. If you can buy drugs in any city (even though it’s illegal), then a criminal who is determined enough can get a gun. And it’s naive to think otherwise.
You see, a criminal that would commit such an atrocious act as killing innocent people with a gun is also evil enough to break a couple laws to obtain one. And if we can’t even keep a few million illegal immigrants from coming into our country, it’s unlikely we can keep guns and even gun parts out of the hands of every criminal.
No matter how strict gun laws are, there will be bad people with guns. We just need to make sure the good people aren’t disallowed from owning these guns or the bad people will be the only ones with the guns.
Zawahri also had magazines able to hold 30 rounds each, which is highly illegal in California. And once again, while the law abiding citizens obey the gun control laws, the lawless do whatever they want.
The mental health issues Zawahri had will be muted by the major news media as they focus more on his “fascination with guns” which is their way of trying to make every gun owner a possible threat and menace to society.
But if these mental health issues lead to his shooting spree, shouldn’t THAT be the focus of the conversation? After all, this same man was reported to have contact with law enforcement 7 years earlier when bomb making materials were found in his house after threats were made to students, teachers and campus police officers at Olympic High.
