A record number of Tennessee residents are applying for and getting handgun carry permits. In 2012, there were 43,650 applications filed for carry permits from January to the end of October. But that number has been shattered in 2013.
During the same time period in 2013, there have been 75,236 applications. Many believe this is a result of political decisions made shortly after the Newtown school shootings, which threatened to take away gun rights from all the people who DIDN’T commit the atrocity.
As more people become aware that 911 will not save them in many life or death situations, Tennessee residents do not want to become victims. Many of these new applicants are first time gun owners and many of them are women.
“There’s a very large increase, especially in the last few months,” Karen Becotte told News 2.
“Its often about women just deciding they want to defend themselves,” added Becotte who spent 23-years as a New Hampshire police officer before moving to Nashville. “I was just instructing a 75-year-old lady who just lost her husband. She is alone now and wants to defend herself–does not want to be a victim.”
