Not only was the homeowner in this case armed and ready to defend himself against an intruder, but he also had a word of advice for the home invader.
This is yet another defensive gun use in which the law abiding citizen was able to stop a crime because he was a gun owner and he was willing to use his firearm to stop the crook.
According to theindychannel.com,
INDIANAPOLIS – A homeowner shot an intruder in the leg in an early morning break-in on the city’s northwest side.
The shooting was reported in the 900 block of West 34th Street just before 3 a.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
IMPD said medics took the would-be thief, later identified as 39-year-old Kocho Long, to Eskenazi Health, with a gunshot wound to the leg. Long remained in custody at Eskenazi later Thursday evening and was said to be stable.
The homeowner, identified as 42-year-old Howard Murphy, told police someone had broken into his home on Wednesday. IMPD said detectives canvassed the surrounding area searching for evidence.
Murphy told investigators he scuffled with Long before shooting him in the leg. Medics said Murphy was hurt a bit in the scuffle, but not too badly.
After Long was shot, he ran south to 33rd Street, where neighbors saw he was injured and called 911.
Murphy said he hopes Long learned a lesson.
“You don’t know when a person is gonna be there. You need to take that into consideration. Get a job. Do things the honest way and stop breaking into people’s houses. Because you don’t know who is waiting around the corner,” Murphy said.
